Why 'Feels Like' Exists

Air temperature is a physics measurement; perceived temperature is a physiology measurement. Your body cools by radiating heat, evaporating sweat, and warming the boundary layer of air on your skin. Wind, humidity and sun all change how those mechanisms work.

Wind Chill — How Cold Steals Heat

Wind strips the warm boundary layer your body produces, accelerating heat loss. The 2001 NWS formula models this for a 5-foot-tall walking person: WC = 35.74 + 0.6215T − 35.75V^0.16 + 0.4275·T·V^0.16. The Wind Chill Calculator applies it instantly. Frostbite risk doubles at every 10°F drop in wind chill below freezing.

Heat Index — When Sweat Stops Working

Sweat evaporates and cools you — but only if the surrounding air can absorb water. High humidity halts evaporation. The Heat Index Calculator uses Rothfusz's nine-term polynomial regression. At 90°F and 70% humidity, it 'feels like' 105°F — the danger zone where heat exhaustion starts.

Dew Point — The Honest Humidity Number

Relative humidity is misleading because it depends on temperature. Dew point — the temperature at which condensation begins — is absolute. Below 13°C (55°F) feels comfortable; above 21°C (70°F) feels oppressive. Use the Dew Point Calculator for the most reliable comfort indicator.

Danger Thresholds

Wind chill below −19°F: frostbite in 30 minutes. Wind chill below −45°F: frostbite in 10 minutes. Heat index above 105°F: heat exhaustion likely. Heat index above 130°F: heat stroke imminent. Plan outdoor work and exercise around these.

Athletic Implications

The American College of Sports Medicine recommends modified intensity above 90°F heat index and cancelled practice above 103°F. Cold-weather athletes should cover all skin below −20°F wind chill and limit exposure below −40°F.

The thermometer is the input. Wind chill, heat index and dew point translate it into what your body will actually experience. Plan accordingly — frostbite and heat stroke don't care that the air temperature 'looked fine'.
