What Is TDEE?

Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is the total number of calories your body burns in a 24-hour period. It accounts for everything: your basic bodily functions at rest, the energy used to digest food, and the calories burned through all physical activity — from walking to the kitchen to intense gym sessions.

TDEE is the most important number in nutrition because it defines your energy balance. Eat at TDEE and you maintain weight. Eat below it and you lose weight. Eat above it and you gain weight. It's that simple — though calculating it accurately requires understanding its components.

The Four Components of TDEE

1. Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

BMR is the energy your body needs to sustain basic life functions at complete rest — breathing, circulation, cell production, hormone regulation. BMR typically accounts for 60–75% of your TDEE. It's calculated using formulas like Mifflin-St Jeor:

  • Men: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + 5
  • Women: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age − 161

2. Thermic Effect of Food (TEF)

Your body burns calories just to digest and process food. Protein requires the most energy to digest (20–30% of its calories), followed by carbohydrates (5–10%) and fat (0–3%). TEF accounts for roughly 10% of TDEE on a mixed diet.

3. Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (EAT)

Calories burned through deliberate exercise — running, lifting weights, cycling, swimming. This is the component most under your direct control and can vary enormously from person to person.

4. Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (NEAT)

Everything else — walking, fidgeting, typing, cleaning, gardening. NEAT is surprisingly variable: it can differ by up to 2,000 calories/day between individuals of the same size. This is why some people seem to "never gain weight" — they're unconsciously more active.

Activity Multipliers for TDEE

  • Sedentary: BMR × 1.2 (desk job, little exercise)
  • Lightly Active: BMR × 1.375 (exercise 1–3 days/week)
  • Moderately Active: BMR × 1.55 (exercise 3–5 days/week)
  • Very Active: BMR × 1.725 (hard exercise 6–7 days/week)
  • Extra Active: BMR × 1.9 (physical job + daily exercise)

Using TDEE for Weight Management

For weight loss: eat 300–500 calories below TDEE for steady, sustainable loss (roughly 0.5–1 lb/week). Avoid extreme deficits (>1,000 cal/day) as they cause muscle loss and metabolic adaptation.

For muscle gain: eat 200–300 calories above TDEE (lean bulk). Excessive surpluses mostly add fat, not muscle.

Recalculate TDEE every 4–6 weeks as your weight changes, because BMR decreases with body weight loss.
