What Pitch Actually Means

How to Measure Existing Pitch
Hold a 12-inch level horizontally against a rafter. Measure the vertical drop from the level's free end straight down to the rafter. That drop in inches is your rise per 12. A drop of 6 inches = 6/12 pitch. Easier than climbing on the roof in most cases.
Pitch Categories
0/12–2/12: flat — needs membrane roofing (EPDM, TPO). 2/12–4/12: low slope — modified shingles only. 4/12–9/12: conventional — standard shingles work. 9/12–12/12: steep — needs roof jacks. 12/12+: very steep — special install required.
How Pitch Affects Cost

Pitch and Drainage
Below 4/12, water runs slowly and back-up is a real risk. This is why low-slope roofs need membrane and continuous flashing rather than discrete shingles.
Pitch and Snow Load

Solar Considerations
Most regions have an optimal solar pitch equal to the latitude. A 30°-pitched roof in Atlanta is ideal; a 45° roof in Boston is. If you're building for solar, pick the pitch deliberately.
