What Is Compound Interest?

The Compound Interest Formula
The standard formula is:
A = P × (1 + r/n)nt

- t — the number of years

Worked Example 1 — Annual Compounding
You deposit $10,000 at 7% annual interest, compounded once per year, for 30 years.
A = 10,000 × (1 + 0.07/1)1×30 = 10,000 × 1.0730 = $76,123. Your $10,000 turned into more than seven times its original size with no extra deposits — purely from compounding.
Worked Example 2 — Monthly Compounding
Same deposit, same rate, but interest is added monthly (n = 12).
A = 10,000 × (1 + 0.07/12)12×30 = 10,000 × (1.005833)360 = $81,164. Switching from annual to monthly compounding adds roughly $5,000 to the final balance — over 6.6% more — at zero additional cost to you.
Worked Example 3 — Daily Compounding
With daily compounding (n = 365), the same deposit grows to about $81,650. The leap from monthly to daily is small because the formula is bounded by the limit ert, which equals $81,662 for our parameters. Doubling your time horizon does not double your final balance — it more than triples it. Consider $10,000 at 7%:
